Haiti Earthquake Response
A powerful 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti at 5 PM Haiti time (10 PM UTC) on Tuesday January 12 . The epicenter is 10km from the capital Port Au Prince. The full extent of the disaster is not known yet but it appears to be a major calamity with extensive loss of life and widespread damage to infrastructure and buildings. Being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere they are bound to need international assistance.
AMURT & AMURTEL staff and volunteers are already on the ground and support teams are flying there in the coming days to assist in the operation. We have a decade of experience with relief work in Haiti and facilitate many ongoing development projects there. We are going to respond to this calamity fast and effectively and we are committed to stay as long as it takes to alleviate the suffering this natural disaster has brought about.
