After School Expansion in Romania

New After School Centre
ROMANIA Sunrise Centre - Panatau
In summer 2007, we will be opening a new after school centre in Panatau, in collaboration with the Mayor of the city and Cooperating Netherlands Foundation. The centre, called “Sunrise”, will provide a hot meal, homework support and extra-curricular activities for approximately twenty of the most economically disadvantaged children of the village.
UNICEF recently published a research report about the school drop-out rates in rural villages in Romania. The findings show that there are simple issues affecting school drop outs, and thus illiteracy that continues the cycle of poverty in rural areas. These are poverty, hunger, and the fact that parents are uneducated and unable to help children with homework or provide the example and inspiration to do so. This underlies the importance of our new After School Project.
A quote from the report:
" The children are usually hungry. They cannot stay in class until noon, because they are hungry. They either leave, or they stop listening. Many complain about stomach aches, or headaches. Last winter, they were absolutely hungry, they had nothing, and they were begging in the village. That was their only source of food."
We have high hopes that this project will play an important role in giving an opportunity for a better future for these children. We will guarantee the children a nutritious meal and provide the moral and practical support they need for their educational development.
The project has already begun. We hope to be on track to complete renovations and equip the centre by the end of the summer. We have already started work on cleaning out the building and planting a vegetable patch in the front garden.
