Dear friends,

Internet wasn't working for a couple of days and electricity isn't available nor will it be for a good while. There is lack of water for drinking, bathing etc, in the case of the school we are fortunate to have a water filter and a diesel engine with enough fuel to supply for cooking and drinking. Also we have a treadle pump by the dug well which enables people to take bath and wash clothes. Many people carry water from afar and boiling water is increasingly difficult with the rain soaking the environment and the markets short of supplies, and of course no electricity is available.

In the wake of a massive cyclone, at least 22,000 Burmese are dead. More than 40,000 are missing. A million are homeless.

But what's happening in Burma is not just a natural disaster--it's also a catastrophe of bad leadership. - Burma's brutal military junta failed to warn the people, failed to evacuate low-lying areas, and suppressed communication so that the Burmese people didn't know the storm was coming. Now the government is failing to respond to the disaster and even obstructing international aid organisations. Read more about the UN's frustrations with the Burmese Leadership here

AMURT have started putting together a massive relief effort in Burma in order to help those suffering in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. We have one key worker inside Burma allready hooked up with a large group of Buddhist monks ready to work with us and we have another key worker on his way there with start up funds and expertise.
